30 years experience in cultural & community development.

 

Government Cultural Programs:

·         Division Manager, Cultural Affairs, Austin Parks and Recreation Dept., (1991-1998) – responsible for 15th

largest municipal arts agency in the US and a senior manager in one of largest Parks departments in US.

Supervised facilities, personnel, programs, and grants for the arts.  Developed budgets ($4.5 million) and policy.

·         Coordinator, Community & Regional Arts Programs, British Columbia Cultural Services Branch (1978-1984),

 1st coordinator to work with 100 arts councils and 50 museums in BC.  Administered $500K in annual grants.

 

Major Events – designer, programmer, and producer of over 50 major events, including:

·         BC Pavilion, World’s Fair, Expo ’86, Producer, Events and Performances – designed and implemented

entertainment programs featuring 12,000 BC artists in 6,000 performances over 165 days.  Also, served as one of

the daily floor managers.  The BC Pavilion was rated as one of the top two attractions, attendance 30 million.

·         Trail of Lights, Austin Parks Dept., Producer (1991-1997) – mile long Christmas display attended by over

200,000 in two weeks; chaired dept. team; negotiated $400K/3-yr. sponsorship with Dell Computer Corp.

·         The Arts “Designing Community”, Austin (1999) – coordinated annual conference for Texas arts councils.

·         US Urban Arts Federation, Austin (1997), annual conference for arts agencies of 50 largest US cities.

·         Chilliwack Bluegrass Festival, Producer (1988-1990) – established on-going fundraising event for arts center.

·         BC Festival of the Arts (1989), Chilliwack, Exec. Dir. – annual Provincial competition for 1,500 amateur artists.

·         Kootenay Christmas Market, Nelson, BC (1974-1977) – co-founder, event is self-supporting & still operating.

 

Cultural Facilities – assisted design teams on all BC Pavilion venues & 15 City of Austin capital projects, plus:

·         Austin Arts Facility Survey (1996) – designed & supervised study, wrote 50-page report for the City Manager.

·         Downtown Arts Museum Study, Austin (1996) – led City inter-dept. team, 50-page study of $25M museum.

·         Chilliwack Arts Center, General Manager (1998-1991) – re-structured entire operation eliminating deficit, raised

funds and designed/supervised $500K in renovations to the building.

·         North Peace Arts Center, Fort St. John, BC (1990) – as consultant wrote 200-page study and business plan.

·         David Thompson University Center, Nelson, Theatre Manager (1978) – supervised facility for Selkirk College.

·         Langham Arts Center, Kaslo, BC (1976) – 1st administrator of heritage award winning facility in small village.

 

Urban Planning and Other:

·         Designing Community Project, Nelson, BC (1999-2002) – founded design & planning lecture series; raised

$150K of funds incl. Real Estate Foundation of BC.  Speakers included award winning builders and architects

from Vancouver.  Coordinated BC tour for Mayor Riley of Charleston, SC, founder Mayors’ Inst. of City Design.

·         New Urbanism (2000 & 2001) – member of Congress of New Urbanism, attended conferences in New York and

Portland.  Documented urban planning principles in NY, BC, CA, CO, NM, TX, and MX with 5,000 slides.  Gave

keynote lecture on new urbanism to 2001 conference of planning commissioners in San Luis Obispo County, CA.

·         Designer/Builder – of pueblo style adobe home in Mexico; general contractor of two Santa Fe Style homes

featured in the Sunday Homes section in the Austin American-Statesman; renovated heritage homes in BC.

·         Tile/Mosaic Artist – work in completing and installing mosaics and public art, including a hotel and restaurant.

·         The Environment – supervised Austin Nature Center and 10,000 acres of preserves in Division in Austin Parks

Dept.; wrote grants and managed 2001 “Greening Communities Initiative” funded by the Province of BC.

·         Grants Writer/Fundraiser  – designed projects, wrote grants, raised funds in US and CN for over $3 million.

·         Grants Manager – drafted policy/applications (reviewed 2,500) managed government grants totaling $20 million.

·         Business Degree – BBA degree (Marketing), strong financial management skills, & “on-budget” track record.

·         Publicist – designed campaigns; writer of columns, editorials, & newsletters; edited issue of TX Parks magazine.

·         Tour Manager – for cultural exchange programs between Austin and MX and for performing arts groups in BC.

·         Seminars – led sessions on “New Urbanism for Cultural and Economic Development,” Total Quality

Management, Strategic Planning, Designing Arts Festivals, Planning /Operating Arts Facilities, & Budgeting.
